FIG was founded in 1878 and is a United Nations and World Bank recognized non-governmental organization of national member associations, cadastral and mapping agencies and ministries, universities and corporates from over 120 countries. FIG covers the whole range of professional fields within the global surveying community, hereunder surveying, cadastre, valuation, mapping, geodesy, geospatial, and quantity surveyors and provides an international forum for discussion and development aiming to promote professional practice and standards.

At the end of the two most recent 4-year terms (2010-2014 and 2014-2018) of the joint commission 3 ‘Spatial Information Management’ and commission 7 ‘Cadastre and Land Management’ FIG Working Group on 3D Cadastres, it was decided to collect the best known practices in a single FIG publication. Key authors were invited to lead a chapter on various topics within 3D cadastre.

The General Assembly 2019 took place during FIG Working Week 2019 in Hanoi, Vietnam on 22 and 26 April.

At the General Assembly FIG President Staiger  presented the Council Work Plan for the term 2019-2022.
